The acquisition of 12 Sukhoi Su-30MKI will enhance the capabilities of the Indian Air Force. These aircraft will be indigenously produced by HAL in India.

Sukhoi Su-30MKI is a twin-engine, two-seater, multi-role fighter aircraft developed by Russia’s Sukhoi Aviation Corporation.

Details of the Contract

The Defence Ministry has signed a contract with M/s Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) on December 12, 2024, to procure 12 Sukhoi Su-30MKI aircraft. The contract’s value is approximately Rs. 13,500 crores. These Sukhoi Su-30MKI aircraft would be manufactured at the HAL production facility in Nasik. The aircraft will have 62.2% indigenous content, and the Indian Defence Industry will manufacture many components. It significantly boosts the Government’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative.

About Sukhoi Su-30MKI

The Sukhoi Su-30MKI is a long-range, all-weather twin-engine fighter aircraft developed by Russia’s Sukhoi Aviation Corporation and produced by HAL under license for the Indian Air Force. It has advanced avionics, including DRDO’s Tarang Radar Warning Receiver and Virupaakhsa active electronically scanned array radar. It can carry various weapons, including Brahmos supersonic cruise missiles, rockets, and bombs. The Indian Air Force can use Su-30MKI for both offensive and defensive missions. Its long-range capabilities allow the Indian Air Force to operate against threats from neighbouring countries in a contested environment.

IAF’s Current Challenges

The Indian Air Force currently operates below the strength of authorized squadrons against the authorized strength of 42. Delays in acquiring 114 fighter aircraft under the MRFA program and delays in supplying General Electric (GE) with F414 engines have posed significant challenges for the Indian Air Force, which urgently needs to replace its aging fighter aircraft fleets to counter China, Pakistan, and newly emerging threats at India’s eastern borders.

Significance of this Procurement for IAF

Sukhoi Su-30MKI aircraft are the backbone of the Indian Air Force, which currently operates approximately 12 squadrons of Su-30MKI aircraft. Procuring these 12 Sukhoi Su-30 aircraft will enhance the Indian Air Force’s operational capability and strengthen the country’s defense preparedness. The existing production, repair, and overhaul facilities will ensure operational readiness, reduce dependency on foreign countries, and boost the Indian Defence Industry.
