The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has secured a deal with the United States to procure twenty (20) MK 54 Lightweight Torpedo (LWT) all-up rounds. Earlier this month, the US State Department approved the military sale of MK 54 Lightweight Torpedoes and associated elements to Saudi Arabia.
Overview of MK 54 Lightweight Torpedo
The MK 54 Lightweight Torpedo is a key anti-submarine warfare (ASW) weapon primarily used by the United States Navy. Developed by Raytheon, it serves as a replacement for the older MK 46 torpedo.
This 2.71-meter-long torpedo can be launched from various platforms, including surface ships, helicopters, and fixed-wing aircraft, making it a versatile asset for ASW operations. Upon entering the water, it autonomously seeks and engages targets, utilizing both active and passive acoustic homing systems for guidance. The MK 54 Lightweight Torpedo represents a significant advancement in naval warfare technology, providing U.S. forces with enhanced capabilities to effectively detect and neutralize submarine threats.
Details of the Deal
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has secured a deal with the United States for twenty MK 54 Lightweight Torpedoes. The deal will also include spare parts for the MK 54, MK 54 Recoverable Exercise Torpedoes (REXTORP), handling shapes and containers, training, publications, support and test equipment, as well as engineering, technical, and logistics support services from the U.S. Government and contractors. The estimated total program cost is $78.5 million.
This military sale supports the United States’ foreign policy goals and national security objectives by improving the security of a partner country that plays a key role in promoting political stability and economic progress in the Gulf region. By upgrading its anti-submarine warfare capabilities, Saudi Arabia will enhance its ability to deter current and future threats.
Integrating the MK 54 torpedoes into Saudi Arabia’s naval operations reflects a strategic move to bolster its defense posture and operational capabilities in a complex security environment.
