Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS)’s strategic visit to Indonesia from December 15 to 19, 2024, is expected to enhance maritime cooperation between the two countries significantly.
Context of India-Indonesia Maritime Relations
India and Indonesia have deepened their maritime relations through shared seafaring traditions and rich history. These relations are rooted in mutual interests in maritime security, trade, and cultural exchanges, which reflect their historical connections as seafaring civilizations. Both countries have shared interests in the Indo-Pacific Region, including maritime security and freedom of navigation. In recent years, maritime security has been a cornerstone of India-Indonesia relations.
Both countries have significantly strengthened their bilateral relations through closer military cooperation, enhancing maritime security initiatives, and promoting collaborative efforts in defense industries after elevating their relations through the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP) in 2018. The maritime cooperation between the two Navies encompasses a range of activities, including joint exercises, port visits, and training initiatives aimed at building capacity.

During his visit, Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, Chief of the Naval Staff, will have bilateral discussions with top-level political and defense officials, including Mr. Sjafrie Sjamsoeddn, the Defence Minister of Indonesia, General Agus Subiyanto, the Commander of the Indonesian Armed Forces, and Admiral Muhammad Ali, the Chief of Staff of the Indonesian Navy.

Both countries are conducting the 43rd India-Indonesia Coordinated Patrol from December 10 to 18, 2024, along the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) to enhance maritime security in the Indo-Pacific Region.
