The fourth edition of the multinational exercise LA PEROUSE commenced on January 16, 2025, and will conclude on January 24, 2025.
This edition features the participation of personnel, surface, and sub-surface assets from various maritime partners, including the Royal Australian Navy, French Navy, Royal Navy, United States Navy, Indonesian Navy, Royal Malaysian Navy, Republic of Singapore Navy, and Royal Canadian Navy.
Historical Context
Exercise La Perouse 2025 is taking place in the strategic straits of Malacca, Sunda, and Lombok. The naval forces from nine countries are participating:
- France: Leading the exercise with its Carrier Strike Group (CSG), including the Charles De Gaulle aircraft carrier.
- India: Represented by the destroyer INS Mumbai.
- United States: Participating with the Littoral Combat Ship USS Savannah.
- Canada: Involved with the destroyer HMCS Ottawa.
- Australia: Contributing the destroyer HMAS Hobart.
- Malaysia: Deploying the destroyer FFG Lekir and additional support vessels.
- United Kingdom: Present with HMS Spey, an offshore patrol vessel.
- Singapore: Participating with the patrol vessel RSN Independence.
- Indonesia: Providing logistical support for maritime patrol operations.
The exercise aims to develop common Maritime Situational Awareness by enhancing cooperation in the fields of maritime surveillance, maritime interdiction operations, and air operations. Additionally, it focuses on conducting progressive training and information sharing.
The exercise provides an opportunity for like-minded navies to strengthen planning, coordination, and information sharing, leading to enhanced tactical interoperability. Participants will engage in complex and advanced multi-domain exercises, including surface warfare, anti-air warfare, air defense, cross-deck landings, and tactical maneuvers, as well as constabulary missions such as VBSS (Visit, Board, Search, and Seizure) operations.
The exercise La Perouse 2025 represents a crucial effort to bolster maritime security and cooperation among key Indo-Pacific nations amid evolving regional challenges.
